If there isn’t enough sea for you, you can even enjoy a day by the Agia Nikolaos Lake. The possibilities are endless – just don’t forget your swimming shorts and suntan lotion!

A holiday in Crete is so relaxing that you’ll have more than enough energy to get involved in some of the islands various sporting activities. Crete is home to Europe’s longest gorge in the Chania district and at 11km long it is not for the faint hearted but the scenery makes it well worth it. You can also discover Crete by horseback, visit their waterpark or enjoy a range of water activities in the warm clear sea.

To only talk about Crete’s beaches would be of great injustice to the island. There is enough history on this island to keep even the keenest of historians interested. The Rethymnon city has a beautifully preserved Venetian quarter and the breath-taking Fortressa which are waiting to be explored.

The locals are understandably proud of their traditions and are often seen wearing their traditional dress out and about. Crete has a distinct music and art culture from mainland Greece – expect late night dancing with locals to a Cretan Lyra a small string instrument. A holiday in Crete offers you the choice between a British style night out – rain not included – and a traditional night with the locals in the northern part of the island. We can’t talk about night life in Crete without mentioning Malia, the hottest party destination. As well as some of the best bars in Crete, the beautiful white sandy beaches offer the perfect setting to recover from the night before.

The palm beach of Vai (Greek: Βάι) is one of the largest attractions of the Mediterranean island of Crete. It features the largest natural palm forest in Europe, made up of Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti).

For tourism Vai was discovered at the beginning of the 1970s by Richard White and friends from North London, Belfast and Bavaria, at the end of that decade it was popularised by the last Hippies who fled the hot-spots Matala and Preveli. At the beginning of the 1980s Vai was full of backpacker tourists from the whole world, leading to a mixture of chaotic campground and garbage dump. Vai was enclosed and declared as a protected area. The unique forest recovered, the beach became clean.

It is now a big tourist attraction and in August it is difficult to find a spot on the beach or indeed anywhere to park. lf you need the toilets you have to pay a euro or two. Because it is necessary to pay for parking, people park on the road so access can be difficult.

The palm beach, which belongs to the Moni Toplou, is the touristic center of East Crete, with thousands of visitors each year. Vai lies close to Palekastro, Sitia and the Dionysades islands.

Elafonissi Beach
Elafonissi is an island which lies opposite the village of Elafonisos. The island is about 150 meters from the coast and the second largest beach in western Crete. It is widely regarded as the most beautiful beach of Crete, it has sand hills, the water is shallow and beautifully clear, and the shells give it a brilliant silvery color.

Getting to Elafoniss Beach
There are 3 routes to get to Elafonissi Beach. The first, coming from the west coast, is a 1 3/4h drive from Chania and is very curvy. You may also decide to drive through the inland, which is a 1 hr drive from Chania. Lastly coming from the east via Paleochora, you will find an adventurous road, as it is a ½ hr gravel road drive.

The Beach
The beach has characteristics of the Caribbean. The sand is yellowish-pink, and the water is crystal clear. Due to the large numberof tourists coming here every day, some decide to wade through the water to a little island in order to be a bit secluded.

The small rock islands close by are frequented by snorkelers, as many fish and other underwater creatures can be observed.

Elafonissi means “deer island” but their arent any deer on the island. Many tourists visit Elafonissi each summer, especially in the months of July and August so if you want to come at a quieter month it is better to come at the beginning or end of summer to ensure your have the most enjoyable visit.
